Our History

Message in a Bottle… (the POLICE (Sting) released this song the year I graduated from high school, 1979)

In the autumn of 1999, at the age of thirty-nine, I felt a burgeoning desire for my first tattoo. Yet, rather than etching ink into skin, I chose to emblazon a dream upon glass. Alongside the gifted artist Jim Bly, I conceived the “Tattoo Brewery” and its flagship, Rattlesnake Mag Pale Ale. In those days, our recipe was whispered to surpass even the most heralded spirits of Kansas City. But as life would have it, the tempests of business and the sorrow of a dissolving marriage cast that dream into the shadows. The idea remained adrift, unlaunched and unspoken.

Message in a Bottle – The Rattlesnake Mag Pale Ale.

For twenty-five years, a solitary bottle sat upon a dusty shelf—a lone relic of a former life. With no digital ghost or silver disc to prove its existence, there was only the glass, the label, and the memory. In the intervening years, our recipe earned the prestige of a Silver Medal, and my peers often remarked that I had been a man ahead of his time.

Now, at sixty-four, having returned to the soil as a full-time farmer, I find my arms adorned with a dozen tattoos — the first of which finally arrived at age forty-seven. Each mark is a sacred commitment, a silent chronicle of a life lived. Looking upon that weathered bottle amidst my memorabilia, the realization struck: the time is not past; the time is now.

Tattooing is an ancient language, a bridge spanning cultures, religions, and centuries. While once viewed with a skeptical eye in the decades of my youth, it has become a universal tapestry of human expression. It is upon this foundation of authenticity and shared history that we establish Tattoo Brewing Company.

We seek to revive the spirit of that original bottle to unite souls from every walk of life. We believe in the power of a craft well-made to dissolve the barriers of nationality and belief. We stand as a testament to the American spirit — a unique alchemy of diverse cultures that remains the greatest experiment the world has ever known.

At Tattoo Brewing, we honor the ink and the heritage. We offer our spirits as a vessel for unity, urging all to be authentic, to be grateful, and to cherish the liberty of this great land.

Be Authentic. Be Grateful.

Cheers to the Journey.
